When it comes to prostate cancer, African-American males have a higher risk than the total population.  This case involved a physician treating a male of African-American for several issues including issues related to the prostate.  Even in light of the statistics and the fact that the patient complained of prostate related issues, the physician did not order diagnostic testing to investigate the possibility of prostate cancer and did not refer the patient to a urologist.   After reading about the benefits of early cancer detection in an ad in his local paper the patient requested screening.  He was 52 at the time.  For this patient the outcome was that he did have cancer which by the time he was screened had spread outside the prostate making it incurable advanced prostate cancer.  The law firm handling this case reported it settled for $750,000.
